2023 Chardonnay, Gali Vineyard, Deauratus, California, USA

カリフォルニアを代表する名門ワイナリーRidge Vineyardsリッジ・ヴィンヤーズで出会った2人の才能あるワインメーカーによるユニークなプロジェクトです。

Eric Baugherエリック・ボーハー氏は、生化学および分子生物学を学んだ後、リッジで27ヴィンテージにわたってワイン造りに携わりました。彼の分析力により、良いとされるワインの再現性を高め、2000年代のリッジの黄金期を支えました。

石窪俊星氏は、芋焼酎吉兆宝山などで知られる、鹿児島県にある焼酎蔵、西酒造でセラーハンド（醸造補助）としてキャリアをスタートさせ、西酒造を退社後、カリフォルニア大学デーヴィス校に留学、その後、200８年にエリックと共にリッジ・ヴィンヤーズで働き始め13ヴィンテージに携わりました。

2人は共に、リッジの歴史の中でも最高峰とされるワインをいくつも手掛け、複数回にわたり100点満点の評価を獲得しています。
2023年、2人は自らのワインブランド「Deauratus」を立ち上げるという夢を実現しました。
今回入荷の4アイテムは、彼らの初リリースのヴィンテージとなります。



デュラタスは、Deaurātus – ( dǝ‐'rä–tәs ) ラテン語で「ゴールデン」を意味します。

長年の経験を生かし、カリフォルニア全土を旅し、土壌や微気候、ブドウの栽培などを研究し、最高の生産者から最高のブドウを調達することに成功しました。そのことから、デュラタスでは、シングル・ヴィンヤードのワイン造りに特化しています。

2人のワインメーカーは、ブドウ畑の選択、収穫時期、発酵、樽の選択と熟成、瓶詰めの時期まで、プロセスの細部を全て管理しています。全ての工程を管理し、更にそれを２人のワインメーカーがやっているところが他のワイナリーと大きく違うところです。

収穫は、ブドウを日焼けによるダメージと最適な鮮度を保つため、夜22時から日の出前の早朝5時までの間に手摘みで行います。それを石窪氏自らトラックでワイナリーまで運びます。

選び抜かれたテロワール、優れた果実と高度に規律あるワイン造りのアプローチを組み合わせることで、出来上がったワインは見事で非常に「ゴールデン」です。

Chardonnay is often seen as the king of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or.

Burgundy is Chardonnay's spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvellous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

It is quantitatively important in California and Australia, is widely planted in Chile and South Africa, and is the second most widely planted grape in New Zealand. In warm climates Chardonnay has a tendency to develop very high sugar levels during the final stages of ripening and this can occur at the expense of acidity. Late picking is a common problem and can result in blowsy and flabby wines that lack structure and definition.

Recently in the New World, we have seen a move towards more elegant, better- balanced and less oak-driven Chardonnays, and this is to be welcomed.
